Painting eyes without drawing

Painting eyes can be a lot easier than you think if you break it down into simple stages.

The first stage is painting the whites of the eye and Iris in the darkest tone you can see.
The edges of the whites (blue grey in this example) can be left quite rough.
Next finding the edges – eye lash line, lid line, tear duct, lid line shadow, pupil and iris colour .
Adding the bottom lid line, more colours to the iris and high lights can bring life to the eyes.

This final page/stage shows the steps leading to stronger highlights in the eyes, the development of the eye lids (with eye lashes) subdued lighter areas in the whites of the eye and the build up of surrounding eye socket painted in the darkest colour with lighter colours added on top.
